Dominant male orangutan

Display Description

There are two species of orangutans, both found only in Southeast Asia: the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) inhabits the island of Sumatra while the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) lives on the island of Borneo. The two species look slightly different: Bornean Orangutans have darker hair and a shorter beard than their Sumatran relatives, and Sumatran males have narrower cheek pads. Both species are highly endangered due to habitat loss and poaching.
